A Tale of Two Cities=

Charles Dickens (1812-1870)

“Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show. To begin my life with the beginning of my life, I record that I was born (as I have been informed and believe) on a Friday, at twelve o'clock at night. It was remarked that the clock began to strike, and I began to cry, simultaneously.”(Merriman)

Charles Dickens was a brilliant author of many short stories, plays, novels, and both fiction and nonfiction. He was able to paint amazing mental pictures of rich and poor, and made people pay attention to his stories. Dickens was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England on February 7th, 1812. After working the mills to support the family, he used his experiences to write stories of characters such as Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, and Phillip Pirrip. After being released from jail for debt to the county, his father arranged for Charles to attend Wellington House Academy in London where he studied for three years. Soon Dickens published his first set of short stories entitled Sketches by Boz and the same year, married Catharine Hogarth. Charles Dickens lived on for many years after this, publishing more and more stories on the way. He became a well known author, travelled, and gave public readings, and passed away shortly after his 58th birthday in June, 1970. (Merriman)
